“Friends” with the people who fired you when they’re paying you for free lance is a nice way of saying “He’d shoot us if he could but we’re still paying him even less for his work with no benny’s (thanks gawker’s writers union!) so until he finds real work he he smiles and says no hard feelings”
You’re suggesting someone who has had their lively-hood taken away somehow remains “Friends” with the company who did it to them. Your statement (which I’ve seen in another post) sounds nice but I have to assume it’s the company line unless you’re saying you and Mate are personally friends, which is totally believable (because hey maybe you both think Gawker should get bent?).

Of course I’m friends with Mate. We came up as writers together. I’ve been drunk with the guy before. As I’m sure you can understand, there’s only so much I can say when it comes to personnel matters, but he had several European drives lined up for us and I wanted to give him the chance to do them (and for you to read them still.)

I do of course understand that. The down side to having such an open, discussion-centric system like Kinja is that assholes like myself feel the need to point out obvious shit.
Like obviously Mate isn’t saying anything bad about Gawker since they took his paycheck away and are now offering him some free lance work which pretty clearly he should take since he has no job . I’ve been there with a company “Hey you’re fired cause we think we can pay someone somewhere else less to do your job! Hey now that you have no income and obvious financial commitments do you want 80% of your salary, no benefits and the full tax burden to still do your job a bit until we hire someone else??”. Shitty deal but yes, still better than $0 of income.
I do want to state, none of the tasteless gawker-hateraide shit should fall on your shoulders, it’s not as though you personally are at fault for any budget cuts that required removing Mate.
